Simon Le Bon first met Duran Duran in May 1980 through Fiona Kemp, a waitress at the Rum Runner nightclub where the band practiced. She mentioned that he may make a good lead vocalist.
Le Bon allegedly attended the audition wearing pink leopard-print leggings and carrying a notebook full of his large collection of poems, some of which later surfaced as songs on Duran Duran’s early studio albums.
Le Bon spent time listening to the band’s tracks before altering one of his poems, “Sound of Thunder,” to one of the instrumentals. He found a fantastic fit. Le Bon agreed to let Duran Duran “try out” for the upcoming tour.
Within six weeks, the band began performing frequently in Birmingham, London, and Nottingham. In December of the same year, they agreed to a recording contract with EMI Records as a result of their statewide tour in support of Hazel O’Connor.
After the release of “Duran Duran,” their debut studio album, in 1981, Duran Duran rose to prominence as a key player in the New Romantic movement.
The band quickly followed up with the releases of “Rio” (1982), “Seven and the Ragged Tiger” (1983), and the live album “Arena” (1984). Long-lasting concert tours and intensive media advertising accompanied each album release.
