For those children who do not have diagnosed allergies and are not on hypoallergenic formula, unsweetened calcium-fortified milk alternatives, such as soya, almond and oat drinks can be offered from one year of age as part of a healthy, balanced diet which contains plenty of calcium, protein and energy.

Almond, rice, oat milk and coconut milks are pretty much equal although coconut milk contains more fats which is good for very young children.

Common milk alternatives include soy, coconut, rice and nut (cashew, almond) milk. Hemp milk, oat milk and milk made from pea protein are also available alternatives. Some will be found in the refrigerator next to cow’s milk, while others are found in boxes in the beverage section of your supermarket.
