Sheffield enquired about Travis McMichael’s time in the Coast Guard. He responded that his primary responsibility was as a mechanic but also responsible for law enforcement and search-and-rescue missions.
McMichael said he was trained as a boarding officer at the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy and that his employment in the Coast Guard granted him arrest authority.
McMichael’s lawyer then questioned him on his training in the use of force, specifically the “use of force continuum,” which ranges from the first level, such as an officer displaying their presence, to the sixth degree, “deadly force.”
While McMichael said he frequently utilized the methods in the lower steps of the use of force continuum, he never used a baton or used deadly force while in the military.
