Christopher Francis known on stage as “Frank” Ocean is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper.
Born in Long Beach, California, Ocean attended and completed his high school education at John Ehret High School in Marrero, Louisiana in 2005.
Ocean enrolled in the University of New Orleans to study English but due to Hurricane Katrina struck in New Orleans in August 2005, he transferred to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Three years after dropping out from Louisiana, Ocean established himself as a songwriter under the stage name Lonny Breaux.
He adopted his current stage name Frank Ocean from Frank Sinatra and the 1960s film Ocean’s 11, in which Sinatra starred.
What did Frank Ocean do with his label?
In late 2009, Frank Ocean met Tricky Stewart, who aided him to sign a writing contract with Def Jam Recordings. While feeling neglected by the label, Ocean worked on his mixtape Nostalgia without the support of the label and released it on February 16, 2011.
He went on to release his debut album, Channel Orange in 2012.
However, after a 4-year hiatus, Ocean released a visual album titled Endless in 2016 to fulfill contractual obligations with Def Jam.
