The gesture represents violence at home- ‘I need help’, said the sheriff’s office. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, a single hand can send a universal signal for aid in cases of domestic violence or other sufferings.

The girl who went missing on Tuesday from Asheville, North Carolina was found after she used hand signals. She gave the hand signals to the driver of the car who was driving behind her.
The person recognized the gesture and immediately called 911. The kidnapper was pulled over on the highway and was arrested.
The police have not released the signal used by the girl. But, they have informed everyone about the hand gesture and asked them to use it when they find themselves in trouble- especially domestic violence that has increased since the pandemic.
