The six-year-old Jonbenet Ramsey was an American child beauty queen who was murdered on Christmas Day in 1996.
Many people have been suspected in the still-unsolved case due to conspiracy theories, and some have even suggested that her older brother Burke may have been responsible for the horrific murder.
Recently, the Netflix feature-length documentary Casting JonBenét was released; it is a hybrid of fiction and nonfiction that seeks to understand why the legacy of this unsolved crime continues to capture the public’s attention.
What Actually Happened To Jonbenet Ramsey?
Jonbenet was discovered dead in her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996.
The child beauty queen, who had been reported missing by her parents, was discovered eight hours later in the house’s basement by her father. The toddler was discovered wrapped in her white blanket, with a nylon cord around her neck, her wrists tied above her head, and duct tape covering her mouth.
An autopsy on JonBenét’s body revealed that she was hit in the head with a blunt object, knocking her unconscious. She was strangled to death 45 minutes to two hours after being knocked out with a garrote made from a piece of cord and the handle of a broken paintbrush.
Patsy Ramsey stated that JonBenét was not dressed in the same clothes she had worn to bed. Police later confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted, and the official cause of death was “asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma.
Moreover, Investigators retested a blood sample found on JonBenét’s underwear in December 2003, and it was revealed to belong to an unidentified male who was not related to the Ramsey family.
JonBenet Ramsey Was Murdered In Her Own House In Boulder, Colorado
Nobody was the culprit in this as the charges for the murder of the six-year-old were not put on anyone in the family.
Although the killer of the 6-year-old beauty queen was never arrested, suspects involving the incident included her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, her older brother, Burke Ramsey, and a teacher, John Mark Karr, who gave a false confession to the crime.
Following Ramsey’s death, there have been numerous theories and false confessions. Police immediately suspected the family after her death, but DNA evidence cleared JonBenét’s parents and brother Burke in 2008.
In 1999, a jury voted to charge John and Patsy Ramsey with child abuse leading to their daughter’s first-degree murder, but the district attorney refused to sign the indictment.
Furthermore, behavioral experts speculated that Burke may have killed his sister in a jealous rage after she stole some of his midnight snack as he was suffering from mental issues at the time.
Burke responded by filing a £120 million lawsuit against the expert, which was eventually settled for an undisclosed amount.
Where Are JonBenet Ramsey’s Parents Now?
As the investigation dragged on, the Ramseys’ family intended to move on with their lives. They eventually relocated from Colorado to Charlevoix, Michigan, where they had spent their summers for many years.
After 24 years of JonBenét Ramsey being brutally murdered, her family is still dealing with the effects of her loss in their daily life.
Additionally, Ramsey’s brother had a difficult time growing up after the death of her sister. Burke Ramsey remarked, I wanted to grow up like a regular kid, which does not include being in front of TV cameras, for the last 20 years.
He also said that thinking about anything from the past 20 years seemed like it would wake it all up again.
