Was Timothy Laurence married before?

Timothy Laurence has never revealed any details regarding his previous relationship, hence it is unknown whether he has been married before.

However, he is widely known as the second husband of Princess Anne, the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Laurence met Princess Anne while he was serving on the Royal Yacht Britannia in 1986.

Their relationship developed in early 1989, three years after he was appointed as an equerry to her mother Queen Elizabeth II. That same year, the existence of private letters from Laurence to the Princess was revealed by The Sun newspaper, though it did not name the sender.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement: “The stolen letters were addressed to Princess Royal by Commander Timothy Laurence, the Queen’s Equerry. We have nothing to say about the contents of personal letters sent to Her Royal Highness by a friend which were stolen and which are the subject of a police investigation.”

Sir Timothy Laurence and Princess Anne tied the knot on December 12, 1992 at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle in Scotland. They chose to marry in Scotland because, at that time, the Church of England did not allow divorced people to remarry in its churches while their former spouse was still alive.

Following their marriage, Lawrence received no peerage but was made a personal aide-de-camp to the Queen in 2008 and invested in June 2011 as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

Timothy Laurence and Princess Anne currently live in an apartment at St James’s Palace.
