Was Omar Mateen gay, who is his wife? Here are the facts you need to know

The fatal Orlando shooting, which claimed 49 lives and left 53 others injured, leaves us with many questions revolving around the killer’s motive. Omar Mateen, the son of Afghan immigrant parents who was initially investigated by the FBI for ties to terrorists, achieved his grand goal on June 12, 2016 when he opened fire at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. and many came to Orlando sent her early grave before he was shot dead in a shootout with police.

It took the Orlando Shooting to get the rest of the world to explore the life of the 29-year-old, who continued to pledge allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during the shooting. A few questions were asked in search of more plausible explanations for the fatal attack and everything related to it. Thinking about these questions would mean shedding light on all dimensions of the sad event.

who is his wife

Mateen has been married twice. He was first married to Sitora Alisherzoda Yusufiy in 2009. He had met Sitora on a social networking site called Myspace a year before their marriage. Their union only lasted four months but ended legally in 2011.

That same year, he tied his second wife, Noor Zahi Salman, whom he also met on an online dating site. Mateen wasn’t Noor’s first husband. The California-born Muslim Palestinian Arab bride, who was born on May 26, 1986, was married to Palestinian Abu-Rahma. It was an arranged marriage that lasted from 2005 to 2010. A year later she married Mateen.

Noor Salman is the eldest of her parentschildren. Her family had moved to the United States from Ramallah in the 1970s. Her parents, Bassam Abdalla Salman and Ekbai Zahi, settled in California. Her father died in 2015 and her mother owns a grocery store. She attended John Swett High School and attended a trade school in Concord, California. She moved in with Mateen in 2012 and the following year they joined Mateen’s father. Two years later, after the death of her father, she went to live with her relatives in California. She and Manteen share a son.

Noor spent two years in prison after the FBI arrested her and claimed she was not a non-participant in the mass murder. According to the FBI lawsuit against her, she was reprimanded for providing material support to the foreign terrorist group and lying to law enforcement officials investigating the horrific shooting. She was arrested after authorities learned that she had accompanied her husband to buy ammunition, knowing that he (Mateen) was up to something extreme. However, the defense attorney noted that Salman’s only crime was marrying a monster, not her being one.

After discovering that she may not have known Mateen had such bad intentions, Salman was acquitted and released to be with their son, whom his family has been caring for since their absence.

Was Omar Mateen gay?

After the much-discussed filming in Orlando, there was a lot of speculation that Omar Mateen was gay or bisexual. Many suggestions indicated that he probably had gay inclinations as not one but many people who knew him claimed he frequented gay clubs often. His friend from 2006, when he was in the police academy, revealed that Mateen went to gay clubs with him and had once expressed interest in having an affair with him.

Others, who clubbed frequently, said they had seen mates dance with a man in the past. Another old schoolmate claimed that Mateen once asked him if he was gay. An eyewitness who saw Omar Mateen at the club’s entrance before the shooting identified him as the man he used to talk to on a dating site called “Jack’d”. Another claimed he carried out the shooting because he was infected with HIV from a gay partner he slept with the previous night. However, an autopsy performed after his death showed that Mateen was negative for the virus.

Although his father quashed these suggestions, his wife did mention that his father once referred to him as gay in her presence. Thorough investigations by the FBI seem to invalidate all of these claims, as there was no convincing evidence that Omar Mateen favored men over women. Even more compelling is the fact that messages on his cell phone at the time of his death indicated that he had been cheating on his wife with different women.
