Alex Mashinsky, the CEO of the cryptocurrency bank Celsius, is a well-known inventor with 50 patents to his credit. Mashinsky’s second company, VoiceSmart, was one of the first to provide telecom switches capable of handling both traditional phone and Voice over IP call routing.
He also founded Q-Wireless, which ultimately merged with Transit Wireless. Mashinsky was the CEO of Novatel from 2014 until 2015.
The news of his arrest following the detention of Celsius CFO, on the other hand, has stunned everyone.
Celsius: Was Alex Mashinsky Arrested By The FBI?
Alex Mashinsky, the CEO of Celsius Crypto bank is rumored to be arrested by the FBI. Previously, Yaron Shalem, the Chief Financial Officer of cryptocurrency lender Celsius was arrested for money laundering and other crimes in Nov 2021.
According to CoinDesk, he was one of seven persons detained in Tel Aviv this month in connection with Israeli crypto entrepreneur Moshe Hogeg.
Three Israeli sources verified Shalem’s detention. Celsius stated in a tweet Friday that it had been “recently made aware of a police inquiry in Israel concerning an employee,” but did not name the employee.
However, no details about his arrest and charges are made official by authorities.
He made news after decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) BadgerDAO was targeted by a phishing attempt, resulting in Celsius’s loss of 896 BTC.
The DAO, on the other hand, devised a restitution strategy to pay victims for their losses. The “remBadger” token was designed by Badger. Holders of the token were promised a dividend in Badger tokens covering the balance of the loss over the following two years.
There was only one condition: the remBadger had to stay within the Badger vault. All future reparation payments would be forfeited if the remBadger was removed.
On March 18, 2022, Celsius Network inexplicably withdrew all 901 of its authorized remBadger, which were valued at roughly $2.1 million at the time of the transaction.
Recognizing their error, the corporation sought to persuade the Badger team to allow them to re-deposit in contravention of the BIP-80 resolution’s terms.
Following the mistake, Celsius claimed ignorance of the regulations and proposed BIP-91, which would modify the rules to allow them to re-deposit the remBadger.
Unfortunately for Celsius Network, the BadgerDAO took DeFi’s “code is law” approach literally, and the request was defeated 89 percent to 11%.
Using today’s Bitcoin worth (about $30,000), this equates to a loss of nearly $22 million for Celsius.
