Zevon (/zivn/; born January 24, 1947 – September 7, 2003) was an American rock singer-songwriter and musician who rose to prominence in the 1960s. His poems were well-known for their dark and sometimes absurd sense of humour, which he used to great effect. Several well-known artists, including Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, have expressed appreciation for Zevon’s work throughout the years. Excitable Boy is his third studio album, which contains some of his most well-known songs, such as “Werewolves of London”, “Lawyers, Guns, and Money,” “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner,” and “Johnny Strikes Up the Band,” all of which are included on the album (1978). Other well-known songs written by Zevon have been sung by other artists, including “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” (which was a big success for Linda Ronstadt), “Accidentally Like a Martyr,” “Mohammed’s Radio,” “Carmelita,” and “Hasten Down the Wind.” Zevon’s compositions have also been covered by other musicians. In addition to his own songs, Zevon recorded or performed a few covers, including Allen Toussaint’s “A Certain Girl,” Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” and Leonard Cohen’s “First We Take Manhattan.” Zevon’s original works are available on his website. During his time on Late Night with David Letterman and the Late Show with David Letterman, he was a regular guest. Letterman subsequently appeared on Warren Zevon’s My Ride’s Here album as a guest vocalist on the song “Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song),” which he sang alongside Paul Shaffer and members of the CBS Orchestra.
