Ward LeRoy Churchill (born October 2, 1947) is a political activist and author in the United States. From 1990 until 2007, he was a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research focuses on the US government’s handling of political dissidents and Native Americans throughout history. His art is marked by contentious and provocative viewpoints expressed in a straightforward, sometimes aggressive manner. Because of the extensive distribution of a 2001 article, “On the Justice of Roosting Chickens,” Churchill’s work received attention in January 2005. He stated in the article that the September 11 attacks were a logical and inevitable result of what he considers to be illegal US policy, and he referred to the World Trade Center’s “technocratic corps” as “little Eichmanns.”
The University of Colorado started an investigation into accusations that Churchill had participated in scientific misconduct in March 2005, and it concluded in June 2006 that he had. Churchill was dismissed on July 24, 2007, prompting some academics to speculate that the “Little Eichmanns” remark was the reason for his dismissal. Churchill has filed a complaint against the University of Colorado for wrongful dismissal. Churchill was wrongfully dismissed, and a Denver jury awarded him $1 in damages in April 2009. A District Court judge annulled the monetary judgement and denied Churchill’s plea for reinstatement in July 2009, ruling that the institution had “quasi-judicial” authority.
