Walter P. Sage, or Walt Sage, was an American drummer. He was a member of Frankie Ortega Trio, which is known for providing music for the TV series 77 Sunset Strip (1959-1960.)
Early life
Sage was born on April 28, 1928, in Los Angeles, California. He attended Mar-Ken School and graduated in 1945.
Career
Sage studied drumming with Ian Kerr, the drummer of the Cleveland Orchestra. He played with the Peter Merenblum Symphony.
Later, he joined the jazz trio Frankie Ortega Trio. He played the drums, Bert Hanson played the bass, and Frankie Ortega, the bandleader, played the piano. The trio provided music for the TV series 77 Sunset Strip. The music, on Jay-Gee Record, was arranged and conducted by Sy Oliver and other musicians included Charlie Shavers and Richard Perry on trumpet; and Frank Sarraci, Rodnet Levit, and Lawerence Brown on trombone.
In 1971, Sage was the musical assistant to Albert Sendrey and Bert Shefter for the film The Blue Hour (directed by Sergei Goncharoff and Ron Nicholas, and starring Mary Beth Hughes and Anne Chapman.)
Beater for Drums patent
In December 1962, Sage filed for a patent for a “beater for drums.” His invention relates to a new and novel beater for drums, cymbals, and the like and, in particular, to a new and novel ball fan beater providing some acoustical characteristics similar to wire brushes, some characteristics similar to drumsticks, and some new characteristics. The patent (US3150555A) was granted in September 1964.
