Wales’ aspirations in the Guinness Six Nations have been tempered by unfortunate news regarding rookie front-rower Archie Griffin. The 22-year-old tighthead, who made his much-anticipated Test debut against England last Saturday, has been dealt a blow with a knee injury sustained during the intense clash at Twickenham.
Griffin entered the fray in the 54th minute, injecting fresh energy into Wales’ front line. However, his debut was cut short as he fell victim to an injury in the closing stages of the closely contested match, which Wales narrowly lost 14-16 to England.
In light of his injury, Griffin has been released from the squad and will return to his club, Bath, to undergo rehabilitation. A statement issued by the Wales camp confirmed the setback: “Archie Griffin (Bath) has been released from the squad due to a knee injury picked up during Wales’ 16-14 defeat to England on Saturday. He will continue his rehabilitation back at his club. A replacement will be confirmed in due course.”
The loss of Griffin adds to Wales’ injury concerns, with Tom Rogers from Scarlets also sidelined due to a chest injury sustained earlier in January during a European Challenge Cup match against Clermont Auvergne. Rogers will remain with his club for further rehabilitation and will not be joining the national squad.
The absence of Griffin and Rogers presents Wales with a challenge as they prepare to face Ireland in the upcoming Six Nations fixture. With key players unavailable due to injury, Wales will need to regroup and assess their options to maintain their competitive edge in the tournament.
