Vontaze Burfict concussion

The concussions are piling up for Vontaze Burfict, which may end his NFL career

By

At least under Marvin Lewis’ leadership, Cincinnati may be the one of the few NFL locations where concussions aren’t looked at with the severity that they should be. -+But you don’t have to be a doctor to know Vontaze Burfict’s career could be hanging in the balance at the moment.

past Sunday against the Browns, Burfict suffered what was his second concussion of the 2018 season and in the month of December. Officially, it is his seventh diagnosed and documented concussion since his second career season in 2013, but who knows if that number isn’t considerably higher?

Burfict has always played with a sense of recklessness that — more times than not — put his body in harm’s way. Most of the time, it’s what made him the spark that kicked the Bengals’ defense into high gear.

Other times, it’s what lead him to exit the field for extended periods of time; whether it was injury or suspension. That style of play is not long for this day-and-age of football, as not only the rules are cracking down on head-first tackling, but the collisions themselves are getting more and more impactful when they occur.

The linebacker’s latest head trauma earlier this week lead to another premature exit from the field that also included some slight drama with one of the team’s athletic trainers. Burfict was visibly upset with leaving the game for what he most likely knew was another concussion and took out frustration on the trainer, which Lewis commented on after the game.

“He just has to go through the protocol. Sometimes guys don’t want to hear that,” Lewis responded when asked about the incident. “They say they’re fine, but they still have to go through the protocol. They settle down, and then they go do it.”

It’s true that concussions can provoke mood swings and errant behavior, especially right after it happens. Burfict has to be tired of being pulled out of games for head injuries that he can’t seem to avoid, but he should also know the standard he’s put up against is considerably higher than the rest of the league because of the reputation he’s earned as a player.

The good that Burfict can and used to provide on the field is diminishing with every concussion he continues to suffer. Upon returning from his four-game suspension to begin the season, Burfict never looked like the linebacker he was before he signed his latest extension back in 2017.

As the season drained on, he appeared lost and ineffective on more snaps than not. It’s not an exaggeration to say he’s been one of the worst starting linebackers in the league this year, and the recent concussions he suffered certainly won’t help him get back to where he once was.

Looking towards the future, the Bengals’ linebacking corps is once again a major weakness, and there’s even more uncertainty within it than in year’s past. Both Preston Brown and Vincent Rey are free agents and while Nick Vigil and Jordan Evans have given them a healthy amount of snaps, they’re far from reliable assets.

Burfict was the one player in this group that was capable of playing at a high level, but his availability was a concern before his concussions peaked over half-a-dozen in (known) total.

When looking at his minimal dead money compared to his decent-sized cap hit for 2019, the question regarding Burfict’s future must be addressed this offseason; because this situation is likely going to get worse.

Vontaze Burfict brushes aside past with Antonio Brown

The NFL can make mortal enemies into friends.

Ex-Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict and former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown lived as rivals in the AFC North and experienced some of the most brutal games in today’s NFL, often with Brown taking the brunt of a brutal blow from Burfict (sometimes of the dirty variety).

Now the duo will do battle on the same sideline after joining Jon Gruden’s Oakland Raiders this offseason.

Burfict signed a one-year contract with the Raiders on Tuesday night and was immediately asked about sharing a field with Brown.

“It’s all positive, man,” Burfict said, via Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He’s a great player. He’s going to be in the Hall of Fameone day. Honestly, I’m just going to approach him like I do all my other teammates, introduce myself, all that good stuff. There’s nothing negative over here. We’re all on the same team. We’re trying to win a championship over here. … Honestly, we might be the closest friends on the team, you know what I mean? So, just got to go along with it, and I can’t wait to meet him.”

If you made a video of Burfict’s dirtiest hits, the blows to Brown would be some of the worst. You could argue that a high hit from Burfict in the 2015 playoffs might have cost Brown a Lombardi trophy — after the hit in the AFC Wild Card round the wideout was forced to miss a close Steelers’ divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos, who went on to win the Super Bowl.

Burfict insisted Tuesday night he’s not the dirty player the rest of the world makes him out to be.

“I’m not a dirty player. I play a physical position,” he said. “I can’t go out there playing patty-cake. … If I play soft, I’m not doing my job.”

The Raiders are taking a flier that the enforcer can regroup after a disappointing season that saw his production take a nosedive and effort wane. Oakland hopes to reunite him with defensive coordinator Paul Guenther aids that cause.

After suggesting he and Brown could be friends despite their long history as enemies, Burfict talked to the wideout to clear the air.

Trevor resigned from the company in September 2020 amid allegations of investor fraud. He is frequently compared to Elon Musk. Milton dropped out of college to pursue his sales and marketing career. He started an alarm sales company before exiting the business for $300 thousand. He then launched an online used car business before starting alternative energy vehicle company dHybrid, Inc. Trevor Milton founded Nikola Motor Company in 2015, originally in Utah but eventually moved operations to Phoenix. He took the company public through a reverse IPO (when a non-public company acquires a public company), in June 2020. One week after going public, Nikola was valued at nearly $30 billion. The company, which had negligible revenue, was briefly worth more than Ford, despite the fact that it had never produced a single car. In fact, the company disclosed that it’s entire quarterly revenue in the second quarter of 2020 was just $36,000 and all of that was a fee earned from installing solar panels at one of Trevor Milton’s personal homes. As owner of 40% of the company’s equity, Trevor’s net worth has at various times approached as much as $12 billion and as little as $3 billion. In 2019 he paid $32.5 million for a 2,670-acre ranch in Utah. It set the record for most expensive home purchased in Utah’s history. Resignation: Trevor resigned from Nikola in 2020 in the wake of fraud allegations. One allegation alleged that in a marketing video used to entice investors years earlier showed a Nikola truck driving on its own power with an electric engine. It was later revealed that the truck was actually rolling downhill with no power at all. Around the same time one of Milton’s female cousins accused him of inappropriately touching her when she was 15 and he was 18. Milton denied the allegation. When Trevor agreed to resign, he agreed to forfeit $166 million worth of equity and a two year, $20 million consulting contract. He was however allowed to keep $3.1 billion in stock, roughly 92 million company shares.
