Behind every great man stands a remarkable woman, and in the case of Vincent Speranza, that woman was Iva Leftwich. As the loving and devoted wife of the heroic World War II veteran, Iva played an integral role in supporting Vincent throughout his life and military service.
Born on March 23, 1925, in the vibrant neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, New York, Vincent J. Speranza led a life that was marked by courage and determination. Growing up on Staten Island within a close-knit Italian family during the challenging times of the Great Depression, Vincent was shaped by the values instilled by his parents, Frank and Frances Speranza, who provided a strong foundation for their children.
After graduating from high school in January 1943, Vincent’s deep sense of duty compelled him to join the United States Army. Despite his eagerness to serve, he had to wait until he turned 18 before enlisting. Vincent was sent to Camp Upton in New York for training and later volunteered for the elite Parachute Infantry after completing his stint in Parachute School at Fort Benning in Georgia. His journey took him overseas with Company H, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, where he fought bravely in several significant battles, including the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, Vincent’s life took a new direction, and he returned to New York, where he embarked on a career as a teacher at Curtis High School. During this time, he crossed paths with the woman who would become his beloved wife, Iva Leftwich. The couple tied the knot in 1948, beginning a lifelong journey of love, support, and partnership.
Together, Vincent and Iva formed a loving family, blessed with a son and two daughters. As they faced the joys and challenges of life, their bond only grew stronger over the decades. Their enduring love was a testament to the resilience and commitment they had for each other.
Tragically, in 2017, Vincent experienced the heartache of losing his beloved Iva after nearly seven decades of marriage. Her passing left a void in his life, but the memories of their cherished moments together would forever remain in his heart.
Throughout his life, Vincent continued to honor his fellow soldiers and preserve the legacy of World War II, actively participating in commemorative events and sharing his experiences through his book, “NUTS!: A 101st Airborne Division Machine Gunner at Bastogne.”
Vincent Speranza’s journey came to an end on August 2, 2023, at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond his wartime heroics. His devotion to Iva and their family exemplified the depth of his character and the values he held dear.
