Vincent Speranza obituary & Net Worth At Death

Vincent J. Speranza, an American private who bravely served in the United States Army during World War II, passed away on August 2, 2023, at the remarkable age of 98. Born on March 23, 1925, in the vibrant neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, New York, Vincent’s life journey took him from the hardships of the Great Depression to becoming a revered veteran and a beloved figure in the military community.

During his early years, Vincent grew up on Staten Island in a close-knit Italian family. Despite the challenging times, he completed his high school education in January 1943 and then went on to enroll at the prestigious City College of New York. Following his deep sense of duty and patriotism, Vincent enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, eagerly wanting to contribute to the war effort. However, he had to wait until he turned 18 before he could officially join.

Assigned to the 87th Infantry Division, Vincent received rigorous training at Fort Benning in Georgia, later volunteering for the Parachute Infantry. He became a part of Company H, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, and was deployed overseas, where he would find himself embroiled in the epic Battle of the Bulge.

One of the memorable incidents from Vincent’s service occurred during the Siege of Bastogne, where he operated a machine gun from a foxhole in the frontlines. Amidst the harrowing conditions, he showed his compassion by fetching a wounded comrade a drink, managing to find a beer tap amidst the ruins of the town. Although reprimanded for his actions, this act of kindness exemplified the human spirit that persisted even in the darkest of times.

Vincent’s wartime experiences would earn him several awards and decorations, including the Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and more. He served a total of 144 days in combat before being honorably discharged in January 1946.

After the war, Vincent stayed in Allied-occupied France and the Netherlands until December 1945, actively contributing to the post-war efforts. He then returned to New York, where he became a teacher at Curtis High School. In 1948, he married his beloved Iva Leftwich, and they shared a life filled with love and devotion until her passing in 2017. They were blessed with a son and two daughters, forming a strong and loving family.

Throughout his life, Vincent remained dedicated to preserving the memory of his fellow soldiers and the sacrifices they made during World War II. As part of the 75th anniversary commemoration of Operation Market Garden in September 2019, he bravely participated in a parachute drop over North Brabant, paying homage to the airborne troops that fought in that historic operation.

In 2022, after 12 years of attending veteran events in Europe, Vincent made the difficult decision to refrain from further journeys due to health concerns. Despite his physical limitations, his spirit remained indomitable, and he continued to be an inspiration to many.

Apart from his significant contributions to history, Vincent also made an impact on the literary world with his book, “NUTS!: A 101st Airborne Division Machine Gunner at Bastogne,” which was published in 2014.

Vincent Speranza will be remembered not only as a courageous soldier but also as a loving husband, devoted father, and a symbol of resilience and kindness. His legacy lives on, as evident by the beer and limited edition watch named in his honor.

As we bid farewell to Vincent Speranza, we honor the life of a true American hero, whose service and dedication to his country will forever be etched in the annals of history. May his soul rest in peace as we continue to cherish the memory of this extraordinary man.
