John Vincent “Vince” Cable (born 9 May 1943) is a British Liberal Democrat politician who has served as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills since 2010 and as Member of Parliament for Twickenham since 1997. He is the son of the late Sir Vincent Cable.
Cable studied economics at the Universities of Cambridge and Glasgow before working as an economic adviser to the Kenyan government from 1966 to 1968, and then as an economic advisor to the Commonwealth Secretary-General in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1968 until 1974, he was a lecturer in economics at the University of Glasgow. In later years, he worked for Shell as the company’s Chief Economist from 1995 to 1997.
In the 1970s, Cable was an active member of the Labour Party, rising to the position of Labour Councillor in the city of Glasgow. Following his 1982 election to the Social Democratic Party (which subsequently merged with the Liberal Party to become the Liberal Democrats), he sought election to the House of Commons in 1970, 1983, 1987, and 1992 but was unsuccessful, until being elected as the MP for Twickenham in 1997.
Cable was appointed Treasury Spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in June 2003 and was elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in March 2006. He served as Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats for two months in 2007 following Sir Menzies Campbell’s resignation and until the election of Nick Clegg. He resigned from both of these positions in May 2010, shortly after being appointed Business Secretary of the United Kingdom.
