Vic Firth is an American musician and the founder of Vic Firth Business (previously Vic Firth, Inc.), a company that manufactures percussion sticks and mallets. He was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. The business, which was founded in 1963 and has its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, describes itself as the world’s biggest producer of drum sticks and mallets, which are manufactured in Newport, Maine. After merging with Avedis Zildjian Company in 2010, company executives said that the two businesses will continue to operate independently of one another in 2011. Vic Firth was born on June 2, 1930, in the Massachusetts town of Winchester. He was reared in Sanford, Maine, by his parents, Everett E. and Rosemary Firth, and attended Sanford High School, where he received his diploma. He began studying the cornet at the age of four, and went on to study percussion, trombone, clarinet, piano, and music arrangement when his father became a famous trumpet player. His full-time percussionist status by high school, when he formed an 18-piece band at the age of sixteen, was well established.
