Vanessa Estelle Williams is an American actress and producer best known for her roles in the Showtime drama series, Soul Food for which she received NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series and in 1991 crime drama film, New Jack City.
In 1989, Williams began her acting career and appeared in episodes of The Cosby Show and Law and Order. In 1992 she was cast in the Fox prime time soap opera, Melrose Place, as Rhonda Blair, first and only black regular character. She had been written off for lack of direction after only one season.
She also had leading guest roles on NYPD Blue and Living Single, before being cast as a recurring series in Steven Bochco’s ABC legal drama, Murder One from 1995 and 1996.
For her performance on screen, she won her first NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Williams had a recurring appearance in 1996 as Dr. Grace Carr in the CBS medical drama show, Chicago Hope, for which she was nominated for NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.
In 2000, Williams was cast in the Showtime drama series Soul Food as Maxine Chadway, a continuation of his successful 1997 film of the same name. Nicole Ari Parker and Malinda Williams played two other leads. Vanessa L. Williams played the leading role of Teri Joseph in the 1997 film, and Maxine was played by Vivica A. Fox. In 2003, Williams won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her performance and received three further nominations. The series aired to 2004 and became the longest-running drama in American prime-time television history, with a predominantly black cast.
