USFL 4th and 12 rule allows the scoring team to keep the ball in their possession after attempting the 4th and 12 play from the 33-yard line.
The teams can go for it after converting a field goal or touchdown. If they make it, then they can keep the ball. Or else the ball will be handed over to the opposing franchise.
The United States Football League players can apply this rule as an alternative to the onside kick.
USFL came into existence in 1983 and continued for three years. Then, it was dissolved. On 16 April 2022, the minor league was relaunched with its first season.
After the successful first championship concluded last year, the second season has been happening since the 15th of April.
The winner of the 2023 championship will be announced on 1st July. There are 8 teams and 50 roster spots in the spring league, per Sporting News.
USFL is still in a developing process compared to the National Football League.
USFL Rules Different From NFL
USFL rules different from NFL include variations in the play clock, overtime, kickoff, onside and extra-point conversions after touchdowns.
To make themselves more intriguing and distinct from their giant rival, USFL has adopted an alternative set of rules.
Interestingly, there are instances where the NFL has adopted rules from the spring league. Even USLF rules are inspired by other XFL college footballs and the NFL.
There is no point in watching USFL if everything resembles the well-established football league. Nevertheless, sometimes USFL athletes also make it as NFL players.
Here is a list of the rules that are different from the traditional National Football League:
- Onside Kicks
- Overtime
- Kickoff
- Play Clock
- Extra Points
- Pass Interference
- Two Forward Passes
USFL updated the rules for their current season, such as fumble forward. It provided that a ball fumbled along and out of the end zone will not be considered a touchback.
Instead, the ball will be returned to the spot of the fumble and the offense will retain it.
Similarly, the offensive and defensive pass interferences differ in USLF and NFL.
In both leagues, if the defender is found guilty of interfering with the receiver, it will be regarded as a spot foul.
Unlike in NFL, if the defenders are proven innocent, they are only charged with a 15-yard penalty.
Likewise, during the 2022 season, the clock started after incomplete passes in the first and third quarters. In 2023 they included the second and fourth quarters outside of 5 minutes.
In the spring league, they use a 35-second play clock, whereas, in NFL, the game clock is set for 40 seconds. The halftime for USLF is 10 minutes instead of the NFL’s 13 minutes.
While the clubs can throw only one pass in the NFL, the franchises are permitted two forward passes from behind the line of scrimmage.
USFL Onside Kick Rules
USFL onside kick rules give 3 choices to the teams including a 4th-and-12 play. The alternative is not available in any other football leagues.
Under it, the teams can choose to set out for a 4th-and-12 play from their own 33-yard line.
In USFL, if the team scores a touchdown, they can take the game to the next level with three choices:
- Kickoff
- Onside Kick Attempt
- A 4th-and-12 play attempt from the 33-yard line
Going for a 4th-and-12 play may lead to the unveiling of extra strategic elements in the game. Furthermore, it can create a balance in the game.
Eventually, it is the team’s decision on what strategy they want to apply based on the circumstance of the game in real-time.
The losing team can make a strong comeback by striving for an onside kick attempt.
While the traditional onside kick is largely luck-based, this USFL rule helps the team close the score gap.
In the rulebook of the NFL, the team has to kick off toward the opposing team after earning 6 points for a down.
On the contrary, in USFL, the teams are given a choice to go for a 4th down and 12 yards from their 33-yard line and make a gain.
If they succeed, they can retain the ball and continue their play. It adds to the thrill of the game, making it more competitive as the scoring team has more opportunities.
This allows the players to use their brains and rules to take the match on their side.
In NFL Onside Kick is the one where the offensive team kicks the ball in a short distance so that their members have more time to maintain possession. It seems to be more critical during the 4th quarter.
There are rumors that in the near future, NFL may include this rule in their game.
USFL Kickoff And Overtime Rules
USFL kickoff and overtime rules are expected to bring more popularity to the minor league. Such rules add a unique element to the developing league.
Kickoff
The kickoff was at the 25-yard line previously but this season, it was shrunk back to a 20-yard line. This change was applied so that there would be more probabilities for kickoff returns and the removal of touchbacks.
2022 witnessed the return of 80 percent of kickoffs. USFL aimed bigger in 2023 and changed the line hoping to get a 90% kickoff return.
The rule was implemented to make it safer with fewer high-impact collisions. Although the game dynamics will rise, the likelihood of unnecessary penalties and hits has also escalated.
The USFL kickoff rules and that of XFL have been considered better by many football enthusiasts. In terms of the NFL, the kick-off starts from the 35-yard line.
Overtime
USFL overtime rules are quite refreshing but slightly similar to that of XFL. A score in overtime is worth two points.
It is a shootout where both the offense and defense will take turns to score points. If one team can not earn points and another continuously scores, the third play is not conducted.
It is the best of three overtime shootouts. The teams are given three chances for conversions.
The primary purpose of this format is to convert from the opposing 2-yard line, which ultimately affects the trajectory of the game.
If there is a tie after completing all three attempts, there is an arrangement for successive sudden-death rounds.
Per the circumstances of the games, one team ultimately emerges as a champion, ending the game.
Talking about NFL, there is a 10-minute-long overtime, which used to be 15 minutes until 2017. And the game can end in a tie as well.
USFL Extra Point Rules
USFL extra point rules suggest that after a touchdown the teams are given an opportunity for a three-point try.
Teams can try a 1, 2, or 3-point conversion.
The offenses have an alternative for one play from the opposing 10-yard line. Then, they can obtain 3 more points.
These are the options for making extra points in the United States Football League:
- Attempting a point from the 15-yard line
- A 2-yard line 2-point scrimmage play
- 3-point scrimmage play from the 10-yard line

Mike Pereira, the former Vice President of the NFL and current Head of USFL Officiating released a statement in March 2022 regarding the extra point options in the minor league.
Opposite to USFL, the National Football League has set a two-point conversion or one-yard kick to gain extra points.
The two-point conversion attempt can be made from the 2-yard line. Similarly, the Point After Touchdown, commonly understood as PAT in NFL, can be attempted from the 20-yard line.
