Shelley Mather Meyer is the wife of Jaguars Head Coach Urban Meyer. She is a psychiatric nurse and a spinning instructor. She was hired by the University of North Florida (UNF) to teach a clinical in the hospital about mental health to nursing students.
Born in Frankfort, Ohio, the oldest of five siblings, Shelley grew up on a farm and was crowned the 1983 Ross County Fair Queen. She attended the University of Cincinnati, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Colorado in psychiatric nursing.
In conjunction with the OSUCCC – James, the Meyers established the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research with the goal of furthering efforts for recruiting the very best and brightest cancer research experts to the OSUCCC – James. Both Urban and Shelley’s families having been touched by cancer. Urban’s father, Urban Meyer Sr., was a bladder cancer survivor, and his mother, Gisela Meyer, was treated for breast cancer at Ohio State back when her son was the assistant football coach under Earle Bruce. Shelley’s stepmother, Marlene Mather, is also a breast cancer survivor.
Urban is a former football head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He retired as the Buckeye’s head coach in 2018. “I just want to say thank you for the support,” Shelley said after her husband’s retirement. “We really felt the love and support of the fans here our entire time that we’ve been here. Thank you to OSU, the staff, and the College of Nursing. Thanks for welcoming us home and giving us 8 great years.” In January 2021, Urban made the jump back into coaching as the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.
