Types of ear discharge

What does ear discharge look like?

Ear discharge (otorrhea) is drainage from the ear. The drainage may be watery, bloody, or thick and whitish, like pus (purulent). Depending on the cause of the discharge, people may also have ear pain, fever, itching, vertigo, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and/or hearing loss.

What color is ear infection drainage?

In most cases, a ruptured eardrum (or perforated eardrum ) is not a medical emergency; however, it should be checked out by a doctor. The ear drainage in this condition is usually clear but may also be bloody and whitish-yellow. Typically, there is only a small amount of drainage.

What causes yellow discharge from ears?

In many cases, yellow ear discharge is simply a sign of excess earwax or wax that has mixed with water or sweat and fallen from the ear. People who experience other symptoms along with yellow discharge, such as streaks of blood, hearing loss, or pain and inflammation, should see a doctor.

What causes pus in ears?

A ruptured eardrum can be the result of pressure caused by fluid buildup in the middle ear, often from an infection. It can also result from ear injury or trauma from a foreign body. As a result, you may notice fluid or pus draining from the ear.

Can an ear infection be a sign of something more serious?

Unlike childhood ear infections, which are often minor and pass quickly, adult ear infections are frequently signs of a more serious health problem. If you’re an adult with an ear infection, you should pay close attention to your symptoms and see your doctor.

How long does ear discharge last?

Most ear infections clear up within three to five days and don’t need any specific treatment. If necessary, paracetamol or ibuprofen should be used to relieve pain and a high temperature. Make sure any painkillers you give to your child are appropriate for their age. Read more about giving your child painkillers.

Is ear drainage a good sign?

Ear drainage can occur for several reasons, including an ear infection, a ruptured eardrum, or an ear tube that causes fluid to drain. Ear discharge can sometimes be a sign of something more serious, especially if it occurs after a recent head injury.

How do you treat ear discharge?

A doctor should treat swimmer’s ear to prevent the infection from spreading. Typically, your doctor will give you antibiotic ear drops to use for about a week. In severe cases, oral antibiotics will also be necessary.

Does ear drainage with tubes mean infection?

In the weeks and months following ear tube placement, drainage is an indicator of an ear infection and is often easily treated with topical antibiotics.

Is drainage normal with ear tubes?

The tubes may come out of the ear drum and stay in the ear canal. When the tubes are coming out, there can be some itching and a small amount of bloody drainage. This is normal and can be treated with ear drops.

Why is my child’s ear draining fluid?

Cloudy fluid or pus draining from the ear canal usually means there’s an ear infection. The pus drains because there’s a small tear in the eardrum. To help with the pain, give an acetaminophen product (such as Tylenol). Another choice is an ibuprofen product (such as Advil).

Can you flush ears with tubes?

Do not perform flushing if your child has a hole in the eardrum or ear tubes. Stop flushing if it causes pain or dizziness.

Can I put peroxide in my ear with tubes?

Don’t use hydrogen peroxide or drying drops if you or your child has ear tubes or if you have a ruptured eardrum.

What happens if you get water in your ear with tubes?

If water does enter the ears, do not panic. In most instances, nothing bad will happen. If any drainage is observed, please contact your pediatrician to initiate treatment with antibiotic ear drops. The drops will address the infection and will mechanically keep the tube from getting plugged by the dried pus.

How do you get water out of your ear with tubes?

Tip your head toward the affected ear and gently tug on your earlobe. Move your jaw by yawning or chewing gum. Then tilt your affected ear toward the ground. Take a breath, pinch your nose with your fingers, close your mouth and gently exhale to open your Eustachian tubes.

How do you drain fluid from your middle ear?

A myringotomy is a procedure to create a hole in the ear drum to allow fluid that is trapped in the middle ear to drain out. The fluid may be blood, pus and/or water. In many cases, a small tube is inserted into the hole in the ear drum to help maintain drainage.

What happens if you have water in your ear for too long?

If water is trapped in the ear for too long, a person may develop an infection. The infection is generally caused by bacteria that are found in polluted water. Share on Pinterest If an infection is suspected or a person has hearing difficulties, a doctor should be seen.

Why won’t the fluid in my ear drain?

Colds, allergies, infected adenoids, or sinusitis, can cause congestion of the nose and eustachian tube. This congestion causes the tube to be blocked. With the tube blocked the fluid in the middle ear cannot drain.

Why do my ears feel wet inside?

Wet ears typically mean disease, most likely infection. Ear infections create pus, so that might be why your ear feels wet. That is not the only possible cause, though. It is also possible that you have a type of skin growth inside your ear canal called a cholesteatoma.
