Brian Michael Firkus (born August 28, 1989), better known by the stage name Trixie Mattel, is an American drag queen and actor from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is best known as a contestant on the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where he was eliminated in episode four but later returned, and eventually placed sixth overall. He is also known for the web series UNHhhh. In 2017, he released the country album Two Birds.

Early life

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, into a Native American family, Firkus is half Ojibwe. His drag name originated from an abusive stepfather who would call Firkus a “Trixie” when he acted feminine. After graduating high school, Firkus attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Here, he was introduced to drag while performing in a production of The Rocky Horror Show at the Oriental Theatre.

He first performed in drag in 2008, at LaCage NiteClub in Milwaukee. Firkus became a staple among the Milwaukee drag scene, simultaneously performing in Chicago. In 2014, Firkus attended The Institute of Beauty and Wellness before dropping out in 2015 to participate in RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Career

RuPaul’s Drag Race

Mattel competed in season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Her initial audition video included an impression of Anne Frank, which was deemed too offensive to perform on the show. Trixie was controversially eliminated in episode 4, leading fans to question whether the show was scripted, with notable drag queens such as Lady Bunny tweeting their confusion with the decision. Firkus was brought back to the show in episode 8, winning the “Conjoined Twins” challenge with Pearl, but was eliminated again in episode 10. She placed sixth overall in the competition.

Life after Drag Race

Mattel went on to make television and stage appearances and star the web series UNHhhh on WOWPresents with fellow season-seven contestant Katya Zamolodchikova. Mattel has performed her standup comedy show “Ages 3 And Up” and has released the folk/country-music album Two Birds in 2017. She and Zamolodchikova are scheduled to have a show on Viceland entitled The Trixie & Katya Show, set to premiere on November 1, 2017.
