Trey Burton Bio
The Chicago Bears have a tight end Lawrence GodfreyBurton III, known in the sports world as Trey Burton, was born on October 29, 1991 in Venice, Florida where he attended Venice High School. He played as a double threat quarterback for the Venice Indians high school football team and excelled.
During his junior year in 2008, Trey was the team’s starting quarterback. He completed 80 of 133 pass attempts for 1,399 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 919 yards and 24 touchdowns. In his senior year in 2009, the youngster rushed for 1,876 yards with 18 touchdowns and one interception and rushed for 821 yards and 22 touchdowns. In his junior and senior years, he received all national team selections.
Having accepted an athletic scholarship offer from the University of Florida, Trey transferred to the Florida Gators football team from 2010 to 2013. In his freshman year, he had six touchdowns in a single game, breaking the existing record. During his collegiate career, Trey Burton had 720 rushing yards, 976 receiving yards, and 20 touchdowns in 50 games.
NFL career
At the end of his collegiate career, Trey Burton was invited to the NFL Combine along with 21 other collegiate bottlenecks. He had a number of things that put him in a disadvantageous position at the combine, including his height of 6ft 2in and his weight, which was 11 pounds lighter than the rest, which is difficult for both Boy Scouts and sports analysts to figure out , in which position he could play professionally.
Despite the odds against him, TreyBurton finished the race with the fastest 40-yard time, finished second in the three-cone drill and fourth in the short shuttle under his position group in the combine. He chose to attend Florida’s Pro Day on March 17, 2014 along with other teammates. There he performed the various required drills for the representatives and boy scouts of 32 NFL teams, cutting his time on the short shuttle and tricone drill while increasing his long and vertical jumps from the combine.
At the end of the process, the NFL pundits and analysts drafted predictions that Trey is either a seventh-round pick or a priority free agent. The latter turned out to be the case when he was not selected in the 2014 NFL draft, but instead was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles as an uncovered free agent on a three-year, $1.53 million contract with $20,000 guaranteed and with accompanied by a contract bonus of $7,500.
Trey was assigned jersey number 47 in order for him to play both the tight end and running back positions. He played in four preseason games, catching 9 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. Although the Eagles used to have three bottleneck roster spots, head coach Chip Kelly decided that including Trey in waivers was too risky and as a result named him the fourth bottleneck on the Eagles’ depth chart.
He made his NFL debut in the 2014 season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and on December 28, 2014, Trey Burton recorded his first career touchdown and his only score of the season. He played mostly on special teams throughout the season. By the end of his rookie year, he played 15 games totaling 4 combined tackles, 5 carries for 10 yards and a touchdown. He was named to the NFL All Rookie Team as a special teams player.
In 2015, he broke a 2012 record held by Clay to become the first Philadelphia Eagles player to have two touchdown receptions in a single preseason game. After an injury that kept Zach Ertz out of the game, Trey Burton was named the third close finisher to start the 2015 season. He made his first career reception on November 26, 2015, finishing with two catches for 49 yards.
The next year his career took on a new dimension. Under a new head coach, Trey took on a larger offense role for the season. On September 19, he made his first career touchdown appearance with his first career start after October 16. He was also active for his injured teammates at the long snapper position and had 15 games by the end of the season with 37 receptions for 327 yards and a touchdown in four starts. He also played on special teams and recorded 233 offensive snaps, one forced fumble and one forced recovery.
On April 3, 2017, the Philadelphia Eagles signed on to his bid after he received no offers on a restricted second-round bid the Eagles made for him in March. The tight end, who had always worn jersey number 47, chose to change the number to 88 to explain that he was assigned the previous number so he could play running back as well as the tight end. During the Oct. 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals, he made his second career touchdown reception on a 15-yard pass from Carson Wentz that contributed to a 34-7 win.
The Venetian native added another feathered cap during Super Bowl LII. He threw a touchdown pass to Nick Foles for a tie-break, with just 34 seconds remaining in the first half. The touchdown pass, known as the “Philly Special,” helped the Eagles land a 41-33 Super Bowl win. In return, Trey Burton received a big and well-deserved boost in his career, and on March 14, 2018, he drew a curtain on the Eagles by inking a four-year, $32 million deal with the Chicago Bears.
