Travis Knight Biography

An American animator, film director, and producer Travis Andrew Knight he has worked as the lead animator for stop-motion animation studio Laika and directed the films Kubo and the Two Strings was out in 2016 and Bumblebee released in 2018. He attended Jesuit High School, near Beaverton, Oregon and then joined Portland State University where he graduated from.

Knight began his career as a rapper performing under the name “Chilly Tee”. He produced his first album which consists of five songs in a recording studio built in his father’s mansion. The demo album attracted the attention of Bernie Singleton, president of MCA, who passed it to producer Hank Shocklee. He liked the demo and agreed to produce Knight’s debut album with his production team, The Bomb Squad.

During the period of recording his debut album, he decided to move into his parents’ Manhattan penthouse for six months. The Bomb Squad helped him develop fleshed out choruses since Shocklee felt that Knight was very skilled at writing verses, but not that skilled in making strong choruses. After releasing the album, Knight claimed that the record did not sell well and he disliked performing but according to Shocklee, “One of the reasons why it didn’t catch on was because it was one record that came out of nowhere, and rap is about building momentum.” However, Shocklee is proud of the album, saying, “This record still holds up. You can play it now and it doesn’t sound dated.”

Since Knight’s father was an investor in will Vinton Studios he persuaded the company to hire Travis as an intern immediately after his graduation from Portland State University. Knight worked on the television series The PJs for Fox Studios and Gary & Mike on UPN, as well as television commercials and promo spots. By 2003, Knight’s father Phil Knight became a controlling shareholder in Will Vinton Studios.

The company had been losing money due to poor management, and Travis Knight was promoted to the board of directors, despite him not having any management skills and experience. The Knights rebranded the company as Laika when they recognized that the company had begun to fail after the departure of Vinton. Travis Knight has been the vice president of animation in Laika since 2005. In 2014, he began working on his directorial debut, Kubo and the Two Strings. The American stop-motion action fantasy film was released in 2016. Knight together with Arianne Sutner was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, for Kubo and the Two Strings.
