The story follows a chef named Theo, who comes to his old house in order to sell it, but discovers that there is more to life and love than that.
Toscana follows Theo as he travels from Denmark to Tuscany after his father’s death. With his new restaurant back home nearing completion, Theo is in desperate need of cash, which he may acquire via the sale of his father’s castle in Italy.

However, upon his arrival, Theo is introduced to a culinary culture that inspires him more than he has in a long time. When combined with the company he keeps while there, the sale of his father’s estate may not be the smooth commercial transaction he had envisioned.
For foodies, Toscana is a film and a half. It’s structured like one of those culinary and travel shows, with plenty of close-ups of traditional recipes being prepared and panoramic views of local products and the locations from where they came.
The Tuscan evening heat and the atmosphere of getting together to celebrate life’s basic pleasures were almost palpable. I’m not sure how I avoided popping open a Moretti while watching this.
Toscana’s charm is that it recognizes its talents and lets them perform the grunt work. It used food as a secondary character, but the magic of having such a common element to work with means it is accessible to everyone rather than being a difficult metaphor to grasp.
As good as it was at leveraging the gastronomic components of its plot, Toscana fell short in a handful of ways. At first, Theo was a bit of a stumbling barrier. To begin with, he was a true growling bear of a character, which I understand provided for his redemption arc as the film progressed, but it did make me a bit wary at first.
