Toronto Maple Leafs Captain John Tavares Was First Exposed To Hockey In Ontario

John Tavares, 31, is a Canadian professional ice hockey center and captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is the son of his proud parents, Joe and Barbara.

He played nine seasons and five as the captain of the New York Islanders after being drafted first overall by them in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Before moving to the London Knights and Michael Del Zotto at the 2009 OHL trading deadline, Tavares competed at the major junior level for the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Oshawa Generals.

Tavares entered the OHL after achieving an “excellent player” designation at 14, which allowed the Generals to draft him as an underage player in the OHL Priority Draft in 2005.

On the ice, John is seen as a natural leader and a player who puts his team first. In addition to serving as the alternate captain with the Canadian junior team in 2009, Tavares was elected team captain of the Oshawa Generals in 2008.

John Tavares Mother Barbara Molded Him

John Tavares was born to his mother, Barbara Tavares. She was both a loving mother and a strict mom that made John what he is today.

Barbara was the hawk that kept an eye on John as the star became brighter. She was one of ten kids born to working-class Polish immigrants in Sudbury. When he needed a push, she gave it to him.

She stood up for him when he wanted more challenging opponents, drove him to hockey and lacrosse games, prevented him from sleeping with the other kids so he wouldn’t miss morning practice, made him “feedbag” lunches, and took calls from agents and reporters.

According to The Athletic, John’s coach once said that she is very tough with her son, and her passion and protective nature can be seen in John too. As he got ready for his first training camp with the Leafs, Tavares remarked, “My mom was the ultimate hockey parent.”

“She took me to the rink more than just twice or three times a week. So I requested to spend six or seven days a week on the ice in the fall and winter. And playing lacrosse in the sweltering heat of the summer while being that dedicated every day.” He added.

Barbara even acted as her son’s agent after the family fired Bryan Deasley in the spring of 2008. Many of John’s coaches accept that his mother has been his biggest supporter. S he has made the proper choices on his behalf.

Barbara is stubborn; when she is passionate about something. Simply put, The hockey player most likely wouldn’t be playing in the NHL if it weren’t for Barb.

John earned the success, but Barb wouldn’t let her kid become arrogant or entitled. People familiar with Tavares still praise his persistence in remaining humble in the face of an already illustrious career. He scored the most goals in the OHL, went first overall in the NHL Draft, and finished as a finalist for the Hart Trophy in 2013 and 2015.

John Tavares Was As Reserved As His Father Joe

John Tavares is a legend of hockey, but he is also a very reserved person. He probably took this trait from his dad. Tavares is “a very, very reticent guy,” despite sometimes opening up; if someone cracks a joke, he might smirk or not say much.

Joe was born to his parents, Manuel and Dorotea, and when he was eight years old, his family moved to Toronto from the Azores, a group of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic.

He enjoyed baseball and would frequently throw his younger brother John so many pitches that he would eventually urge him to stop. But, despite his passion, Joe didn’t have much time to engage in games as he had to make ends meet for the family.

Joe would contribute anywhere, such as in Kensington Market or picking worms all night long. The senior John Tavares, ten years Joe’s senior, claimed that having his children participate in sports was not a priority for them because it was their job to help pay the bills.

Barbara, the player’s mother, oversaw the day-to-day operations of the family business and drove John and his two younger sisters to school, frequently sifting through paperwork in the stands of different arenas. Joe was in the field performing manual labor, often working six or seven days a week.

He couldn’t make it to most games, but he taught John the fundamentals of the game when he was young, and he would muster the strength after exhausting workdays to put on the pads and play goal.

Using his handyman abilities, Joe also made a haven for John to advance in his passion. John could practice his two favorite sports on a tiny rink in the family’s basement that included boards, lines, and nets.

John Tavares Has Two Siblings: Sistes Barbara & Laura Tavares

John Tavares was born as the only son among his siblings. He has two sisters, Barbara and Laura Tavares.

Her sister, Barbara’s name, was kept after their mother. Both of his sisters are huge supporters of John. They also have a considerable role in the professionalism of Tavares.

Barbara, his mother, said to NHL.com that John’s two sisters kept him in line.

She said, “I had three kids under three, so I thought it was fantastic when John started playing hockey. In the summer, I would take the girls out, and every weekend, the family would go to various national tournaments for lacrosse.”

“They were all a great age, so it was pleasant when we did the hotel thing.” She added.
John enjoyed returning to the family and connecting with his sisters, even though he played and interacted with children older than him.

John Tavares And His Uncle Shares The Same Name

John Tavares has an uncle who shares the same name.

John Sr. says the two share a personality even if their names are coincidentally related. They both tend to be quieter, yet both strongly desire success.

The Little John looked upon his uncle for inspiration. So the first time John Tavares, age 5, saw his uncle play with the Bandits, he couldn’t keep his eyes off the ball or the activity on the field.

Later, the Toronto Maple Leaf’s captain would become a ball boy for the squad and observe everything he could, from how the pros trained to how teammates interacted.

The younger John Tavares even insisted on playing for the Mississauga Tomahawks because of his uncle. Regardless of how poor the squad was, “he was always like, “No, I’m going there, and I’m going to make them excellent.”

Fans believe that he assisted them in reaching the playoffs in his second season, which hasn’t happened in Mississauga in perhaps 20 years.

The younger Tavares closely observed how his uncle, a high school math teacher who holds the record for most goals, assists, and points in NLL history, handled expectations and ensured that each teammate felt valued regardless of their position.
