As of 2023, the University of Alabama has 39 official fraternities recognized by the Office of Student Involvement. This number is not absolute as students can propose new fraternities they want to introduce.

If you wish to propose a new fraternity, contact Kathleen Duffy, the current Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at The University of Alabama.

Currently, the fraternities at UA are governed by four councils: The Alabama Panhellenic Association, The Interfraternity Council (IFC), The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and The United Greek Council (UGC).

Fraternities are often negatively stereotyped as cults in movies and TV. However, they play an important part in a college student’s life by providing a platform for new students to get to know each other and socialize.

As the Bama Rush documentary became popular, we have also ranked the Sororities At University Of Alabama from hardest to get into to easiest and popular.

University of Alabama Fraternity Hazing

The University of Alabama fraternity hazing policy is zero tolerance. The administration takes strict action against students involved in such acts.

Students should be able to understand that a harmless prank for one person could be a source of grievance or self-degradation to others.

Hazing is the act of humiliating or abusing a new member of a fraternity or sorority. It can also include manipulating someone to commit an act that causes embarrassment or even physical injuries.

Hazing is often mistaken to be a fun college tradition. Mostly freshman students become victims of such acts. They are manipulated into thinking that the tradition has been carried out for generations and can help them toughen up.

Worst Hazing Fraternities

Although hazing is banned by all fraternities, still cases emerge every now and then. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon is considered the most deadly fraternity due to repetitive cases.

The fraternity suffered the deaths of 10 students all over the US from 2004 to 2014. The cases became so severe that it had to cancel the pledgeship program.

In 2022, five cases of hazing were reported at the University of Alabama, one each for Alpha Kappa Lambda, Delta Chi, Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Zeta Beta Tau.

What Constitutes Hazing?

Here are a few points that have been classified as hazing by the university administration:

  • Forcing a person to consume alcohol, drugs, or other addictive substances.
  • Forcing a person to wear inappropriate clothes.
  • Depriving someone of sleep.
  • Depriving someone of food.
  • Forcing a person to commit an act that can affect their academic performance.
  • Any activity that brings humiliation or embarrassment to someone.

Is Hazing Illegal?

44 US states have currently banned hazing, whereas 13 states have laws to prosecute hazing acts as felonies.

If you suffer or witness an act of hazing, make a call to the Hazing Hotline (205-348-4258). However, the hotline is not for emergencies. If someone is in need of immediate service, call 911.

Similarly, not reporting an act of hazing violates the Code of Student Conduct. Strict action can be taken against you if it is found that you turned a blind eye to hazing.
