Template:Infobox with a coin in it Diane Marleau, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, officially launched the two-dollar coin (often known as the toonie) on February 19, 1996. The toonie is a bi-metallic coin which on the reverse side features a picture of a polar bear by artist Brent Townsend. The face of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of this coin, as it does on all other contemporary Canadian coins. It is the only coin in which the words “ELIZABETH II / D.G. REGINA” are printed in a different font than any other Canadian currency, and it is also the only one in which the issue date is continuously printed on the obverse. The coin is produced utilising a unique distinctive bi-metallic coin locking mechanism. It is expected that the coins would endure for 20 years. The two-dollar note that was phased out was less costly to produce, but on average, each bill barely lasted a year in circulation. In the years prior to 2012, the coin’s inner core was made of aluminium bronze, and the outer ring was made of pure nickel. 

However, in spring 2012, the composition of the inner core was changed to aluminium bronze coated with multi-ply plated brass, and the composition of the outer ring was changed to steel coated with multi-ply plated nickel. The weight was reduced from 7.30 grammes to 6.92 grammes, while the thickness was increased from 1.8 millimetres to 1.75 millimetres, respectively. Using multi-ply plated steel technology, which is already in use in Canada’s smaller coinage, the Mint claims that it produces an electromagnetic signature that is more difficult to forge than that produced by regular alloy coins; in addition, using steel saves money by avoiding fluctuations in the price or supply of nickel. The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) announced design modifications to the loonie and toonie on April 10, 2012, which include the addition of additional security measures.
