Tony Murtagh was born in the English city of Manchester in 1960. He dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue a business career that would see him appear on the Rich List of the Times and the Entrepreneur of the Year lists. Tony Murtagh started his first business when he was 21 years old and sold it a year later in order to invest the proceeds in his father’s finance brokerage business. Murtagh relocated to Cornwall in the late 1980s as a result of the recession. He had only two employees at the time. Murtagh transformed The Mortgage Group into the largest specialist mortgage broker in the United Kingdom, employing more than 800 people between 1995 and 2004. There was some controversy surrounding the company, as some customers claimed that the company was “targeting borrowers with a bad credit history, overcharging on brokerage fees, and mis-selling expensive payment protection policies.” The company was the subject of a BBC Panorama investigation. They were originating over 1,000 mortgages a month with GE Money, with a total value of more than £1 billion per year at the time he sold the company to GE Money in 2004. Every month for the two years preceding the sale, profits averaged over £1 million per month. Tony founded The Money Group in 2005, based on a business model that was similar to that of The Mortgage Group. An injunction against the Money Group was issued in 2004 because of a loan that was deemed “grossly exorbitant.” Since relocating to Cornwall, Murtagh has owned or operated a number of local businesses. Not all of these businesses, however, have been successful, with Baltic Pine Conservatories, located on the Bickland Industrial Estate in Penzance, going into administration in 2006 and its employees at the company’s manufacturing facility in Longrock, Penzance, being informed at the same time that the company had ceased operations, resulting in the loss of over 50 jobs. Members of Parliament have called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the closure, which they believe could result in the loss of up to 200 jobs in total.
