Anthony Peter McCoy OBE (born 4 May 1974), often known as AP McCoy or Tony McCoy, is a Northern Irish horse racing jockey who is now living in England. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2004. When he was awarded BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2010, he made history by being the only jockey to ever get the honour. RTÉ Sports Person of the Year was awarded to him in December of that year. McCoy won his first race when he was 17 years old, in 1992. McCoy rode Mountain Tunes to victory at Towcester on the 7th of November, 2013, becoming the 4,000th winner in his career. McCoy has won the title of Champion Jockey every year since he began riding professionally. While still an apprentice for now-retired trainer Toby Balding, McCoy was able to win the Conditional Jump Jockeys Title in his first season of riding in the United Kingdom, with an unprecedented number of victories (74 for a conditional rider). The first time McCoy won the Champion Jockey title was in 1995/6, and as of 2013/2014, he has won 19 consecutive championships, breaking the previous record of seven consecutive titles held by Peter Scudamore. McCoy has won the Champion Jockey title in every season since 1995/6. McCoy has been victorious in almost every major race that has been held. His most notable victories include the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the King George VI Chase, and the Grand National, which he rode aboard Don’t Push It in the 2010 edition.
