Tom Frieden coronavirus outbreak | Update

Tom Frieden expressed concern over what he perceived as the CDC’s relative lack of involvement in the public response to the coronavirus outbreak.

“I would feel a lot safer if it were clear that the CDC were both at the table and at the podium,” Frieden said on “Fox News Sunday” after guest host John Roberts noted that it had been several days since the CDC’s current leader, Robert Redfield, made a public appearance.

“They have more than 700 medical professionals … fighting this without the CDC central to the response has never been done with an infectious disease in the U.S. before and it’s like fighting with one hand behind your back,” he said.

“Sadly, in places like New York City and elsewhere, I’m afraid we will see an increasing number of health-care workers infected and the potential that we will overwhelm some of our intensive care capacity, that’s what I’m most concerned about in the coming week,” he added. “That’s why in New York City and elsewhere people are scrambling to scale up the capacity to care for patients safely but that’s not easy to do.”

Frieden was also asked by Roberts for his thoughts on President Trump’s frequent touting of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a potential treatment for the virus, despite lack of FDA approval for that use.

“We all hope there’ll be a good treatment for people with the severe infection for this virus because that would make a big difference,” Frieden said, adding “things seem promising but until you really study them, until you really figure out does it work, we don’t know.”

  • We need a robust response to protect American women and reduce the number of families affected( by Zika), anything we don’t do now, we will regret later.
  • The risk to delegations going and athletes is not zero, but the risk of any travel isn’t zero. The risk is not particularly high other than for pregnant women.
  • We need it back to keep Ebola from roaring back.
  • This study is another good documentation that tobacco control really is the best buy, we need to invest in it because it will save lives and save money.
  • Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S., and it is driving up our healthcare costs, on the flip side, tobacco-control measures save lives and save money. The states that do more on tobacco control see their people live longer and cost less in health care. There are some new technologies for controlling mosquitoes that might work out, and what we’ve got to do is accelerate testing them out to see if they work. We also have to use the tools we have today to protect people as well as we can today because it’s likely that we’re going to see more countries affected by Zika and more travelers coming back to the U.S. with Zika.
  • We are at risk of losing the race here.
  • In spite of having worse risk factors, they tend to live longer than those with lower risk factors and higher socioeconomic standards.
