What Happened To Toby Dorr? She Had Helped John Manard Escape Prison
Toby Dorr was sentenced to 27 months in prison after she pled guilty to helping John Manard escape prison in 2006.
She was the head of the dog training program at Lansing Correctional Facility. There she met 17-year-old John Manard, who was serving a life sentence.
Manard and Dorr grew close quickly and fell in love. Hence, the couple had concocted a plan to get Manard out of the facility.
The two succeeded after Manard lost about 25 pounds of his weight to fit into one of the dog crates that Dorr used to bring to the prison.
John and Toby had escaped into Dorr’s white cargo van, where the dog crate containing John had been loaded. The two ran to a Tennessee cabin in the woods, where they were headhunted for twelve days.
The U.S. Marshals had arrested them sometime later after being engaged in one of the most notorious high-speed car chases of all time. Distractify mentions that the chase went for 60 miles on an interstate highway.
John had crashed the car on a tree, thus, leading to his and Toby’s arrest. He is still serving his life sentence and the additional sentence for his prison escape.
Meanwhile, Toby served 27 months in prison, got out, and married in Kansas City. At that time, she was known by her former name, Toby Young.
In her interview with Today, Toby confirmed that she and John have made peace regarding the incident.
