Charles Pope was born on 7th August 1936 in Clayton County, Georgia, USA. He has a brother named Joseph Pope, who was the leader of the singing group The Tams.
The Pope brothers and Horace Key and Robert Lee Smith formed the vocal group in 1952. After sharpening their skills in local pubs and taverns at $1.25 per night, they were ready for the big leagues.
In the 1960s, the band signed a music deal with Swan Records, which included their new band member Floyd Ashton. The group took the name The Tams to reflect the Tam O’Shanter hats during their performance.
The group began to enjoy success in their endeavour till the late 80s. During the time of his success, Charles married his girlfriend Dianne Cottle-Pop, who nurtured three children of theirs.
The pair had married in the early 1970s.
Later in 1996, Charles had to replace his brother Joseph following his demise and take the role of lead vocalist for the music group. He performed till May 2009 but couldn’t continue due to his health issues at later dates.
Charles was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in his old age and passed away following the long battle on 11 July 2013, at the age of 76.
He was buried at Sherwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum, which is located in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia, USA.
