After making his film debut in Quadrophenia and gaining wider television exposure playing Barry Taylor in all four series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, as well as appearing as Aubrey the chef in Mike Leigh’s Life is Sweet, Timothy Spall went on to have roles in numerous films including Crusoe, Secrets & Lies, Shooting the Past, Topsy-Turvy, Vanilla Sky, Rock Star, All or Nothing, The Last Samurai, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The King’s Speech.
In the Harry Potter movie series, he also played Wormtail, Peter Pettigrew. In 1991’s “Back to Reality” episode of Red Dwarf’s fifth season and in 1993’s Rab C. Nesbitt, a Scottish comedy series, he had a guest appearance.
Spall was a talented singer in addition to being an actor, and he sang lead on the song “The Devil is an Englishman” from the 1986 film Gothic, in which he played John William Polidori.
He also portrayed Albert Pierrepoint in the 2005 film Pierrepoint, which was titled The Last Hangman in the US. In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006), he performed the voice for the character Barry Mickelthwaite, the Phil Collins manager of the game.
