Former Major League Baseball player Tim McCarver is now a well-known baseball announcer. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, on October 16, 1941.
McCarver spent 21 seasons in the Major Leagues as a catcher for the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was a two-time All-Star and led the Cardinals to two World Series victories in 1964 and 1967.
McCarver started his broadcasting career as an analyst for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980 after quitting playing. The New York Mets, ABC Sports, CBS Sports, and Fox Sports were among his later employers.
Before the 1970 season, McCarver and his coworker Curt Flood were traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, which led to Flood suing baseball over the reserve clause. McCarver then had brief stints with the Phillies, Expos, Red Sox, and Cardinals (he was replaced on the roster by the rookie Keith Hernandez).
According to Peter Gammons, McCarver, who was a backup catcher for Boston at the time and was 33 years old, was considered a potential managerial replacement for struggling team president Darrell Johnson in 1975, which may have altered the trajectory of McCarver’s career. Although McCarver was let go, Johnson led the Red Sox to the 1975 AL championship (to return to the Phillies).
