Former German pole vault champion Tim Lobinger went away suddenly on Thursday at the age of 50, according to his family, who spoke to German media.
He created history in 1997 when he became the first pole vaulter from Germany to clear the six-meter bar outside.
He took home the gold at the 2003 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England. He won the bronze medal in Moscow in 2006.
Moreover, Lobinger won the gold medal at the European Indoor Championships held in Valencia, Spain, in 1998 and Vienna, Austria, in 2002.
At the European Athletics Championships in Budapest in 1998 and Gothenburg, Sweden in 2006, the top pole vaulter was also given silver medals. Also, he competed for Germany at four Olympic Summer Games in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008.
Lobinger had been battling cancer ever since being told that she had leukemia in 2017. In 2018, chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation were used to successfully cure the illness.
Yet his cancer situation worsened in more recent months.
He admitted that he will not be cured because of the severity of the condition in an interview with the German tabloid Bild in October.
