Timothy MacKenzie Gunn was born in Washington, D.C., on July 29, 1953, to his parents Nancy and George William Gunn. His father was an FBI agent.
He went to the Corcoran College of Art and Design, where he received a BFA in sculpture. He was also very good in swimming and won various tournaments throughout high school.
