Senator Thomas Andrew “Tom” Daschle (born December 9, 1947) is a former United States Senator from South Dakota who rose to the position of Senate Majority Leader during his time in office. He is a member of the Democratic Party in the United States. Daschle was born and raised in South Dakota, where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees before joining the United States Air Force. In 1978, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served for a total of four terms. In 1986, he was elected to the Senate, where he rose to the position of minority leader in 1994. The following year, after being defeated in his bid for reelection, he took on the role of policy adviser for a political advocacy organisation, as well as becoming a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. He co-authored a book in which he argued for universal health coverage. Daschle was an early backer of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, and following the 2008 victory, he was given the post of Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. On February 3, 2009, he withdrew his name from consideration as President Obama’s nomination to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the Cabinet, after increasing criticism over his inability to properly declare and pay income taxes. He is now employed as a Public Policy Advisory for The Daschle Group, a division of Baker Donelson, a major legal firm and lobbying organisation.
