Who is Snoop Dogg?
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., known better by his stage name Snoop Dogg, was born in Long Beach, California USA, on 20 October 1971 – his zodiac sign is Libra and he holds American nationality. He gained recognition in 1992 when featured in the song “Deep Cover” by Dr. Dre, while he became famous all around the world after the release of his debut album, “Doggystyle” in November 1993, which topped several charts including the Billboard 200, and sold around 800,000 copies in the week after its release, becoming certified quadruple-platinum.
Snoop Dogg was raised alongside his two brothers by their mother Beverly Broadus, while their father Vernall Varnado, a Vietnam veteran and a singer, left the family when Snoop Dogg was only three months old – this is why Snoop Dogg was named after Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. who was his stepfather, although his mother divorced Broadus Sr. in 1975.
Snoop Dogg started playing the piano and singing at a very early age, while he began rapping at the age of 12. During his teenage years he worked various jobs, including delivering newspapers to help his mother pay the bills and put food on the table, however, he was also a member of the gang Crips (although he denied this when talking to the police).
Upon matriculation in 1989, Snoop Dogg was arrested charged with cocaine possession, and the following three years saw him in and out of jail.
He launched his singing career when he, his two cousins and a friend, formed the group 213. When he started collaborating with Dr. Dre, he chose Snoop Doggy Dog as his stage name, and then in 1995 founded his own record label Doggy Style Records, Inc. He went on to release his second album, “The Doggfather” in November 1996, and then in March 1998 signed with No Limit Records, releasing several albums under their auspices, including “No Limit Top Dogg” and “The Last Meal”.
He has been making music to this day, and on 19 November 2018 received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He is also an actor, having appeared in numerous TV series and movies, and starred in some, playing the lead character in the comedy film “The Wash” and the horror movie “Bones”, while he co-starred alongside Wiz Khalifa in the stoner movie “Mac and Devin Go to High School”. Three of the TV series he has starred in are “Doggy Fizzle Televizzle”, “Dogg After Dark” and “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood”, and he also directed his own pornographic movie – “Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle” – which was produced by Hustler, and won him an AVN Award for Top Selling Release of the Year 2002 – he’s also directed another pornographic film, “Snoop Dogg’s Hustlaz: Diary of a Pimp”.
He was once a member of the Nation of Islam, but in 2012 converted to Rastafari, and changed his name to Snoop Lion following a trip to Jamaica, however, the name didn’t stick for long.
He is a huge fan of sports, and the teams he cheers for are the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball), the Los Angeles Lakers (basketball), and the USC Trojans (football). Snoop Dogg is also a certified football coach, and once coached his son Cordell’s team.
Snoop Dogg smokes cannabis on a daily basis, and although he said he quit in 2002, he came back to it and today smokes around 80 blunts every day.
He claims that he worked as a pimp in 2003 and 2004, which would seem unlikely given his success in music.
