Colin was born in 1932 in San Francisco, California, U.S. While employed by NASA, he was in the CBS News studio for the Apollo 11 moon landing assisting Walter Cronkite, an American broadcast journalist, as he narrated the landing.
In the early seventies, he was appointed by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center to develop effects for and direct an early multimedia presentation, “Voyage to the Outer Planets (1973), that showed a spacecraft touring the solar system.
Cantwell was also previously employed to assist with visual effects for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey with Douglas Trumbull. In 1974, he was appointed to work on the original Star Wars film.
