Michael Peterson and Kathleen, his second wife, had been married for more than ten years and had raised a large blended family of children from prior marriages. Margaret and Martha Ratliff, the daughters of their friends George and Elizabeth, were also raised by them.

The Peterson children were split regarding their father’s innocence during Michael Peterson’s arrest, trial, and 17 years of appeals. Clayton Peterson is Michael Peterson’s oldest son from his first marriage to Patricia Sue, an elementary school teacher at Gräfenhausen’s Rhein-Main Air Base.

However, Clayton and his younger brother Todd moved back in with their mother after Michael Peterson and Patricia Sue split in 1985. They subsequently moved to Durham, North Carolina, to live with their father and spend the rest of their childhood and teenage years there.
