Dale Chihuly Eye Loss, What Happened?
The American artist Dale Chihuly suffered eye loss when he got involved in major car crash years ago in 1976.
Chihuly is a renowned for his glass art who shared that in 1976, when he went to England, he encountered a serious car accident. The head-on accident sent him through the windshield and the glass of the car cut deep into his face. His left eye lost its vision and he started wearing an eye mask because of the loss of sight in his left eye.
Dale was thrown out of the car from the windshield because of the strong impact of the accident. The artist had to get more than 250 stitches in his face with all the cuts he had. Sadly, the doctors were not able to save his left eye and it had been completely damaged.
After completely losing sight in his left eye and injuring his shoulder in a body surfing accident he does not make glass sculptures anymore. In 1979, he passed on his glass-blowing pipe to a team of artists. He only makes beautiful paintings and does not make glass art. He is dependent upon the assistant gaffers or glassblowers to make his unique glass designs.
The artist let the students of the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) run their fingers through the glass art made with hea, centrifugal force as well as gravity in the Chihulys Studio also known as the hot shop in Seattle. He wanted the students to see the sculpture with their hands.
He stated to the students that as he did not have sight in his left eye he did not have depth perception. He also does not have any peripheral vision in his left eye. When he went to England, he decided to meet another artist, and on the way to the artist, he met with an accident. According to Wbur, he was not wearing a seatbelt and he went through the windshield and got several cuts and damage to his face.
It took him months to recuperate and he still wears an eye patch to this day. He did not let his accident bring him down and saw the accident as a turning point in his career.
As he does not have any depth perception, he did not actually know where things were in space without his eyes. He stated that it made him see things differently and made his work different from other peoples work. It has also changed how he executes his art. He now uses head gaffers and has expanded his team with skillful glass blowers and workers.
