The documentary is showcased from the perspective of the Kowalski household. Take Care of Maya was released on June 19, 2023.
Previously, The Family Nation covered an article about the Perron household from Conjuring.
Members of the Kowalski Household
The Kowalski family comprises four members. The parents Jack Kowalski and Beata Kowalski had once-a-happy household with two children.
Before watching the documentary, let’s learn a little about each member of the household.
Maya Kowalski
Maya came into this world in the year 2006 currently she is 17 years old. She was raised in St. Petersburg along with her brother Kyle.
In 2015, she was diagnosed with CPRS, a condition with chronic pain that often affects the arms or legs. When she was nine years old, she began experiencing headaches and asthma attacks.
After some time, lesions began forming on her arms and legs, and also her feet were curling and cramping. Later, Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick identified her symptoms for CPRS and treated the disease with infusions of ketamine.
Beata Kowalski
Beata was an immigrant from Poland who worked as a registered nurse.
She was accused of child abuse due to Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP), a psychological disorder where the caretaker of a child makes up fake symptoms or creates the real symptoms in order for the kid to appear injured or ill.
When the investigation began, she was ordered by the court to undergo a psychological evaluation. The results of the evaluation stated that Beata wasn’t mentally ill.
Jack Kowalski
Jack is the patriarch of the family and the only surviving parent of the two kids. He previously worked as Deputy Fire Cheif at Elmhurst’s Broadview Fire Department.
Jack retired from his job in order to spend more quality time with his wife and children. After his retirement, he along with his loved ones relocated to Venice, Florida to start a new life.
When Maya started to get sick, Jack usually stayed home to take care of his son while Beata accompanied their daughter to the hospital.
Kyle Kowalski
Kyle is the youngest member of the household. He was born in the year 2008 and currently, Kyle is 15 years old. The siblings are two years apart from each other.
The Real Story of Take Care of Maya
Kowalski Take Care of Maya true story dates back to the year 2016. Maya was rushed to the hospital due to intense abdominal pain.
The young girl was admitted to the hospital named John Hopkins All Children Hospital. When she was rushed to ER her parents informed the doctors about her neurological disorder.
Everything began to go downhill when Beata asked the doctors to inject Maya with 1,500 milligrams of Ketamine instead of following the prescription provided by the doctors. The nurse became concerned by her demand so, she contacted the social worker named Debra Hansen.
Hansen filed a formal notice with the state mentioning the negligence and uncooperative nature of a parent regarding the child’s health. But Florida’s Department of Children and Families discarded her report due to lack of evidence.
Due to Beata’s authoritative and straightforward nature, the medical experts began to get suspicious and believed that the young girl was being abused by her mother.
The pediatric ICU physician named Beatriz Teppa Sanchez contacted Dr. Smith for her expert opinion on the matter. Smith is a child-abuse pediatrics with over 30 years of experience.
Smith began to investigate the case with the help of Maya’s medical history from 30 different medical providers. Then filed a second report with the state for overtreatment.
As the investigation went on, Smith developed a theory that Beata suffered from a mental disorder known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
Separation Of Maya From Her Parents
The state issued a shelter order which mentioned that the young girl is kept in the hospital and forbid the parents to meet their daughter. She was removed from the custody of her parents for over three months.
The household members of the family were devastated by the news. Jack was allowed to visit his daughter in the hospital while Beata was permitted to be in touch with her little girl via phone.
Later, the concerned parents hired a lawyer to represent their families. The little girl celebrated Christmas, Halloween, and even her 11th birthday in the hospital. The court had even denied a chance to hug her mother.
The young girl was released from the state custody in 2017.
What Happened To Beata Kowalski
Sadly, Beata took her own life in January 2017 as she couldn’t handle the separation from her daughter. An email written by her was discovered after her demise.
The email mentioned that she was sorry and no longer could take the pain of being away from Maya and being treated like a criminal. She also mentioned that she could not watch her daughter suffer in pain.
During an interview, Jack mentioned Beata’s health was deteriorating since she would wake up late and research ways to save her daughter. Unfortunately, a mother couldn’t embrace her child one last time.
