The KLF (also known as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, The Timelords, and other aliases) were a key figure in the British acid house scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bill Drummond (alias King Boy D) and Jimmy Cauty (alias Rockman Rock) produced hip hop-inspired and sample-heavy songs as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu and, on one occasion (the British number one hit single “Doctorin’ the Tardis”) as The Timelords, beginning in 1987. Drummond and Cauty established the genres of “stadium house” (rave music with a pop-rock production and sampled crowd noise) and “ambient house” as members of The KLF. On their own KLF Communications record label, the KLF had a string of worldwide top 10 successes, and in 1991, they were the world’s best-selling singles act. The pair also collaborated on a road movie called The White Room and released a sarcastic book called The Manual
(How to Have a Number One the Easy Way). They adopted the philosophy espoused by the esoteric novel series The Illuminatus! Trilogy from the start, gaining notoriety for a variety of anarchic situationist manifestations, including billboard defacement, prominent cryptic advertisements in NME magazine and the mainstream press, and highly distinctive and unusual performances on Top of the Pops. Their most famous performance was a February 1992 BRIT Awards collaboration with Extreme Noise Terror, in which they shot machine gun blanks into the crowd and dropped a dead sheep at the aftershow party. The KLF’s exit from the music industry was announced with this performance, and the pair erased their entire back catalogue in May 1992. Drummond and Cauty created the K Foundation using the proceeds from The KLF in order to disrupt the art world by presenting an alternative art award for the worst of the worst.
