In general concept, university courses are comprehensive; Knowing all the subjects essentially learned in secondary schools up to the subjects set for secondary schools is therefore a great challenge for any student who wants to study in Uganda.
However, some disciplines or majors are more comprehensive and challenging in content and time than others. As a result, they take on extra hard work and focus.
In Uganda, these courses seem to be more challenging than others and require dedication, hard work and hard study to learn.
Here are the five most difficult degree programs in Uganda
1. Medicine and Surgery
Medicine is the top challenging course that you can take on in Uganda. The obvious obstacle is the admissions requirements, which include a minimum score for A-level national exams leading to the award of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), which must be administered by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
Also, for you to be accepted into medical school, you must demonstrate proficiency in biology or zoology, chemistry, and physics to A-level standards. Once admitted, it takes 5 years to obtain a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery if there are no repeats.
In Uganda, medical students receive a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree only after successfully completing certain courses from the first to the fifth year.
Some undergraduate medical courses are expected to cover anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry—commonly referred to as basic sciences—in their freshman year.
Such subjects as histology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, psychology and introductory psychiatry are introduced in the second year, while the four major clinical disciplines of internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics, and gynecology are alternated in the third year.
The areas covered in its fourth year are public health (including community health projects) and the surgical specialties ENT, orthopaedics, urology, neurosurgery and ophthalmology, excluding clinical psychiatry, infectious diseases and tropical medicine.
The final fifth year, similar to the third year, is spent alternating through the four major clinical disciplines.
Students are educated at the end of each year. Candidates who fail any of these exams are required to resit those exams. This is the point where most medical students get frustrated, depressed, and beat down. Some even go so far as to take their own lives given the amount of money and time they put into their studies.
Contrary to what is available at universities, in the past, most universities had standardized medical structures, laboratories, competent lecturers and instruments. All these precautions are taken to meet the daily medical challenges. No wonder, then, that parents enroll their children at the best universities in the city. Maybe that’s because no parent wants their kid to do a bunch of medical internships.
While it is common for intending to see medical students who want to settle for the best university, here have a list of accredited medical institutions in Uganda. This list includes four public universities and five public schools.
Private universities include Kampala International College of Health Sciences (established in 2004 in Ishaka, Bushenyi), Uganda Martyrs University School of Medicine (established in 2010 in Nsambya, Kampala), International College of Health Sciences (established in 2008 in Bushenyi, Namuwongo, Kampala), the Habib Medical School (established in 2014 in Kibuli, Kampala) and St. Augustine International University College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (established in 2012 in Mulago, Kampala).
Public medical schools in Uganda include UgandaMartyrs University School of Medicine (established in 2010 in Nsambya, Kampala), Makerere University School of Medicine (established in 1924 in Mulago, Kampala), Mbarara University School of Medicine (established in 1989 in Mbarara), Busitema University Medical School (established in Mbale in 2013), Gulu University School of Medicine (established in Gulu in 2004).
The truth is, being a medical student in Uganda you work harder than you ever have in your life. Indeed, as a sensitive course, medicine is a marathon course in which one must become acquainted with extensive material and the application of basic scientific principles and clinical skills.
The fact that as a medical student you hold a respected position among the best students in the country makes medicine and surgery very exciting.
2.Engineering
I don’t know of any bachelor’s degree that requires more work than engineering. You need to get everything done at the right time, so you need quality time management.
The workload is all-encompassing and involves a lot of calculations. You must be persistent and good at trying all the formulas, even beyond what is given in class. You get out exactly what you put into it. You are right to use the concept. trash in trash out.
Though engineering is quite difficult, it is not as hard as medicine. In addition to math, students must also have a good command of the English language, which tends to lower their grade if they are really bad at it.
Unlike most professional courses, engineering offers excellent job opportunities. But getting to this point takes a lot of hard work, determination, passion and excellence. Yes, in terms of prestige medicine and surgery wins, but in terms of maintaining the creative spirit, engineering is the sure-fire way that wins.
The fact that engineering is full of mathematics makes it quite difficult for people who love words more than formulas.
Some of the best engineering universities in Uganda are Kyambogo University, Makerere University, Uganda Technical College Kichwamba and Busitema University
Uganda Christian University (UCU), Muteesa 1 Royal University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Nakawa Vocational Training Institute and Uganda Technical College Lira.
3. Mathematics
As the name suggests, this has to do with quite a lot of calculations. You must smash your calculator throughout your stint at university and know all the principles to excel at it.
The workload is broad or large, encompassing what you must have done at secondary school but deep down to the core. The biggest challenge is the abstract mathematics. To take this course you must work hard and be willing to spend your entire school life in an accounting circle.
We are all aware that mathematics is the study of numbers, shapes and patterns, but few people know that this course is very important for many fields such as science, engineering, medicine, finance, economics and social sciences. These areas are highly dependent on applied mathematics and statistical analysis.
Fixing all this and staying afloat while studying are some of the reasons why math is considered very difficult in Uganda.
Candidate wishing to study mathematics in most subjects in Uganda Universities must have the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or equivalent and either A Level (UACE) with a major pass in a subject taught in the same session or equivalent was completed.
4. Accounting
This is another difficult course to learn Uganda. It also covers large calculations and requires a maximum study of maybe three to four hours a day. You must be highly skilled in numeracy as you will have to deal with public or private finance after school.
Accounting is the toughest business, requiring you to balance debits, credits, expenses, losses, an individual’s income or business taxes, and more. However, this is just a simple example. You definitely don’t stand a chance unless you’re good at math. But if you’re good with numbers than words, it gets interesting.
Taking up accounting in Ugandan requires a lot of hard work, seriousness and excellence as students are required to complete two levels of ACCA by the time of graduation. You will also be exposed to an emphasis on accounting information systems during your studies.
5. Physics
Physics deals with the study of matter and motion; What is the world made of and how does it work? Physicists study everything from the smallest particles to the structure of the entire universe.
Physics is a very difficult course and definitely needs to touch your social time. There is a lot to learn because there are tons of things to remember. Typically, students struggle with both the concept and the calculations. Taking this course in Uganda requires absolute hard work and focus.
