How Does High School Football Playoffs Work?

High School football playoff format lets two teams from each district advance to playoffs for Conference 1A. The number is 4 for 2A-6A.

University Interscholastic League has set up different rules for different conferences regarding how a team can make their way to state championship games.

The classification of conferences is made according to the number of enrollments in the school. The number of conferences is determined according to the number of participating teams.

For instance, the schools that fall under 1A have the least number of enrollments, and those under 7A have a larger number of student volumes.

Usually, each state will have six to seven conferences depending upon the number of teams battling up in the High School football.

Each high school in those conferences will play 10-11 games per regular season and only the teams with top records will qualify to take part in the playoffs.

UIL has come up with a format for how things work for each conference during the HS playoffs. Let’s look at them in brief below:

1A (Division I and II)

In this conference, two teams from each district will make their way to the playoffs. Both divisions, Conference 1A Division I and 1A Division II will be awarded one state championship crown each.

2A, 3A, 4A, 5A (I and II)

  • The top four teams from each district advance to playoffs
  • One State Championship Crown for 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A Division I
  • One State Championship Crown for 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A Division II

6A

  • The top four teams from each district advance to playoffs
  • Two schools with the largest student enrollment volume will automatically reach to Division I bracket
  • The remaining two schools from the above four will automatically advance to Division II bracket
  • Two State Championship will be awarded Per Conference in 6A
