Tony Quan, the renowned graffiti artist known by his iconic tag name Tempt One or Tempt1, has left an indelible mark on the world of street art. Born in 1968 or 1969, he began his artistic journey in the early 1980s, painting the vibrant streets of Los Angeles with his unique style that seamlessly blended the local cholo graffiti culture with the hip-hop lettering of New York, resulting in what can only be described as the quintessential “Los Angeles” graffiti style.
His contribution to the world of graffiti art was not just innovative; it was revolutionary. Tempt’s ability to harmonize the boldness of classic serif cholo letters with the precision of New York’s hip-hop style gave rise to a visual language that was both powerful and authentic.
However, life took an unexpected turn for Tempt in 2003 when he received a life-altering diagnosis. He was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative nerve disorder that gradually robbed him of his physical abilities. Despite being fully paralyzed, with the exception of his eyes, Tempt remained undeterred in his pursuit of artistic expression.
In the face of this devastating illness, he found a way to continue creating art using a groundbreaking invention—the EyeWriter. This open-source device, equipped with digital, eye-tracking glasses, allowed Tempt to translate the movements of his eyes into art, defying the physical limitations imposed by ALS. His determination and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity inspired people around the world.
Tragically, on September 1, 2023, Tempt One’s remarkable journey came to an end. He passed away at the age of 54, leaving behind a legacy that transcends the boundaries of graffiti art. His ability to adapt and overcome, even in the face of a debilitating illness, serves as a testament to the power of the human spirit and the enduring impact of art.
As the graffiti community and art enthusiasts mourn the loss of this legendary L.A. graffiti icon, his work and his story will continue to inspire generations of artists to push the boundaries of creativity and never give up on their passion, regardless of the obstacles they face.
Tempt One’s legacy lives on in the vibrant streets of Los Angeles and in the hearts of those who were touched by his artistry and indomitable spirit.
