Ted Bundy can easily be described as one of the most notorious serial killers of the 20th century. He was also a kidnapper, burglar and rapist who attacked many young women in the 1970s. Ted Bundy is also known to have staged two sophisticated prison breaks and received three death sentences in connection of two separate trials. His case has inspired several popular novels and films that tell the story of his serial murders.
Due to his good looks, charismatic charm and intelligence, some even claim that the media turned Bundy into a romantic figure.
Who is Ted Bundy?
Theodore ‘Ted’ Robert Bundy (originally known as Theodore Robert Cowell) was born on November 24, 1946 to Eleanor Louise Cowell and a father who escaped after discovering that Eleanor Louise was pregnant. He was born at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Single Mothers in Burlington, Vermont.
Eleanor Louise changed her last name to Nelson in 1950 and moved to Tacoma, Washington to live with her cousins. There she met Johnny Culpepper Bundy and the two later married. The couple have four children and Johnny officially adopts Ted as his son.
In high school in Tacoma, Ted Bundy was arrested at least twice on suspicion of burglary and auto theft, but when he turned 18, those details were stricken from his records, as he is. use in Washington. He then graduated from high school in 1965 and spent a year at the University of Puget Sound before moving to the University of Washington to study Chinese. In the mid-1970s, he was accepted to law school at the University of Utah and moved to Salt Lake City.
While in law school, Ted Bundy then started skipping classes at school and gradually stopped going. It was also when the killings started. Ironically, in 1974, the year the murders began, he was deputy director of Seattle’s Crime Prevention Advisory Commission and even wrote a pamphlet on rape prevention. The first murder allegedly took place on January 31, 1974.
Over the following months and years, more murders and disappearances followed. Her modus operandi was to approach the victim pretending to sustain an injury and ask for help, then lead them to a secluded location where she would knock them unconscious with a crowbar, then strangle them while she was unconscious, before proceeding to have sex with her partner. corpses; he would then leave the naked bodies in a wooded area.
At one point, Ted Bundy was questioned by the police, but he was let go because he didn’t seem to fit the mold of a serial killer. In November 1974, he was identified on a police list by a woman who had narrowly escaped him. Then, in 1977, he was extradited to Colorado for trial, but escaped from prison by jumping out of a window. Although he was caught eight days later, he still escaped by sawing a hole in the ceiling of his cell. He then moved to Tallahassee, Florida, and lived under different aliases.
Ted Bundy was again arrested by Pensacola police for driving a stolen car. This time he was tried and found guilty and eventually sentenced to death by electrocution. He confessed to a total of 36 murders, but it is thought that number could be higher.
Mother
Ted Bundy’s mother, Eleanor Louise, initially told him that his parents were his parents; and his grandparents raised him for the first three years of his life as their son, to avoid the social stigma of having a child born out of wedlock. Everyone, including young Ted, was led to believe that his grandparents were actually his parents and it wasn’t until 1969 that he found out the truth when he came across a copy of his birth certificate. He became displeased with his mother for not telling her of his true parentage.
Eleanor Louise died in 2012 in her hometown of Tacoma, after a long illness. Her death was confirmed by the Reverend Melvin Woodworth, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Tacoma, a church she attended until her health prevented her. She was 88 at the time of her death.
Girlfriend, wife and daughter
Ted Bundy has been involved with a number of women. But the most important was Elizabeth Kloepfer, the woman who exposed him. They met at a bar and it didn’t take long for them to fall in love. She was unaware of his crimes but contacted the police as soon as she became suspicious. In 1981, she published her book The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy under the pseudonym Liz Kendall. Since then, she has stayed away from the spotlight.
Ted Bundy met Carole Anne Boone when he was working for the Department of Emergency Services in Olympia, Washington. Bundy proposed to her in court when she defended her position. An old Florida law provided that declaration of marriage before a judge was a binding agreement. When she accepted his proposal, Ted Bundy told the court that they were married.
In prison, although they were not allowed on conjugal visits, inmates sometimes pooled their money to bribe the guards and allow them to be alone with their female visitors. Thanks to this, Ted and Carole Anne conceived a daughter while he was on death row. Very little is known about his daughter who chose to lay low.
Three years after her execution, Carole Anne divorced, changed her name and left Florida for good. She hasn’t heard from her since.
