The TCA Awards are awards presented by the Association of Television Critics in honor of television quality. It recognizes outstanding television programs and honors actors, producers and programs in various categories. The event began in 1985 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
The Television Critics Association (TCA) is the organization that sponsors the awards and consists of approximately 200 television critics, journalists and columnists from the United States and Canada who cover television programming. The association welcomes applications and selects members twice a year in March and September. Once the selection process is complete, successful applicants and current members will gather in January for the winter press tour at the Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa in Pasadena, California. Another meeting for the Summer Press Tour will be held in July at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
At the conclusion of the summer/July press tour, the TCA awards will be presented in eleven categories after members of the organization voted for excellence in television. Given that they are professional consumers of television programming, these critics tend to be the first to identify exemplary works in the medium.
In 2002, the number of Heritage Awards was increased to twelve to honor a long-standing program that has culturally impacted society.
The 2016 Television Critics Association Awards (TCA Awards) had a record number of new series making the nominations.
“TCA members have a record number of nominations for this year’s awards. In our 32 year history, this is one of the most diverse genres and programs we have ever had. It’s been a banner year for fresh, notable content, and we look forward to seeing which shows and actors scoop the top prizes following the difficult voting process ahead. “
Mr Robot and The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, two such new series, led the 2016 TCA Awards nominations with four nominations each. Most of the awards, however, received most recently The People against OJ Simpson.
The 2016 TCA Awards Ceremony was hosted by Jane the Virgin star Jaime Camil on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
